Tequila 512 is the product of a lot of blood, sweat and tears from local Austinite, Scott Willis. In short, Willis has always been inspired by all things Austin (512 is the local area code), to the point of uprooting his life to move there and be a part of its vibrant music and cultural scene. In 2007, he decided entering the spirits market was the best way for him to be a part of that scene and he set out to create a product and brand that represented Austin and all of the things he loved about the town.
After a great deal of soul searching, followed by diligent research, Willis settled on tequila. He had always been passionate about tequila and loved the history that accompanied it. He started exploring the true origins of tequila, mescal, and sotol and began investigating distilleries in the Tequila region of Mexico. After traveling the region and meeting with several tequila makers, he found a partner. His mission: to capture the soul of Austin in the tequila. They made several batches, each with different tweaks, and eventually Willis landed on the right recipe.
Next, he wanted to create a tequila brand that focused on the product, versus trendy packaging or a catchy name – because that’s how he views Austin. A city that is cool on the inside, not just packaged well. He wanted the brand to be authentic. He’s not from Mexico and the concept wasn’t developed there, so he didn’t feel right going with a Spanish name. He is a Texan who is passionate about tequila and loves the town in which he lives. His tequila, like Austin, is high quality without the pretense.

Made using the finest estate grown blue agave in the central lowlands outside the village of Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico. The agave piñas are roasted in traditional stone ovens and slowly fermented before distillation.
The tequila is filtered for 24 hours, which helps to smooth and mellow the flavor. An oxygenation process is used to enhance the texture, creating a soft, velvety feel. Both processes are implemented without removing the delicate characteristics of the agave. Tequila 512 is winner of a Gold Medal at the 2013 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
